COMMUNITY SERVICE

It has been another very full and busy year for the Community Service committee. Again many thanks to the committee and all members who certainly know how to “lead the way” in service to our community and beyond.

Car raffle

A successful fundraiser again this year. All thanks to Neil Popple and Tanya Barnes for keeping track of monies and filling rosters.

Karkana improvements

Erection of playground equipment proved to be quite a task for fellow Rotarians. Other work undertaken included painting, cutting and fixing of plinth boards to hold protective soft fall material.

Meals on Wheels

Our club continues to participate in this very worthwhile and vital service to our community. We received an Appreciation & Recognition from the Horsham Rural City Council for our contribution to the service, coinciding with Volunteers Week.

Carols By Candlelight

Our security services were not required this year.

Christmas gift wrapping

This service took place once more at Horsham Plaza, a week before Christmas. A gold coin donation was requested from those using the service which is expected to be repeated before next Christmas and possibly extended.

Donations in Kind

Another consignment of goods was transported to the Rotary Club of Ballarat East. Many thanks to Brian Thomas and Wilson Bolton & Co. for the use of a truck and driver.

Australia Day Ceremony

Our club, together with other service clubs participated in the Australia Day ceremony at Sawyer Park by providing a cooked breakfast for the public.

Good Friday Appeal

Many thanks to those Rotarians who willingly gave of their time to rattle collection tins in aid of the Good Friday Children’s Hospital Appeal.

Wimmera Field Days

Members again put their hands to 2 fund raising projects over the 3 days of the field days: catering and the cleaning of agricultural machinery for one of the exhibitors.

Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal

Several members again gave of their time collecting for this annual appeal. Thanks to Alan Vickers for organising collectors.

Wotonga Bridges rehabilitation

Together with Horsham Rural City Council and Apex Club 15, several members assisted in making up decking panels at the H.R.C.C. depot for installation by Apex and the council.

Infant Memorial Garden

This project is well into its planning. A very successful public appeal launch took place on April 19th. We are currently looking at plans for the area, to come within our project budget.

Other areas of service

The club was involved in the following events:

  • Art Is … festival
  • Annual Sheep Dog Show
  • P.E.T.S. weekend (for incoming Rotarian club presidents from around the district).
  • Christmas Card sales (funds to Rotary Health Research Fund).
  • Awakenings Festival

Upcoming projects

  • “Adopt A Spot” campaign: our club has adopted the site of Rotary House as an area to keep tidy as part of the Horsham Tidy Towns commitment.
  • Veta Landt memorial fountain: the fountain’s future is to become a priority project for the new community service committee during the next Rotary year.
